hISTORY
The timeline of weaving in Ethiopia remains somewhat mysterious, with uncertainty surrounding its inception and influences. Ethiopia boasts a weaving tradition deeply rooted in history. In the past, each farmer cultivated a small cotton plot, with women in the family handling the labor-intensive process of cleaning, carding, and hand spinning the cotton into thread. The community would eagerly await the arrival of a skilled weaver who would meticulously fashion all the necessary clothing and blankets for the upcoming year. Today, weaving remains a vital component of Ethiopian culture.
Traditional Ethiopian textiles are renowned for their unique textures, predominantly crafted in undyed cotton and maintaining a pristine white hue. The art of Ethiopian weaving requires the expertise of multiple artisans: a woman to spin the cotton, a man to measure and set up the loom, another woman to prepare the thread bobbins, and a skilled male weaver to bring the textiles to life.Ethiopian weavers continue the tradition of hand-weaving cotton textiles with precision and care.
